a whole day to occupy with just myself.
no else to get ready or worry about just me.... and a gargantuan garden.
it was a literal 100 degrees that day but i didn't care.... i knew i could make it by myself.
you'll have to believe me when i say i exercised amazing self control and am only posted selected pictures. there are lots more....oh my, lots more.
here are my favs.
du pont was a personal friend of suosa so there were fountain shows timed to sousa's music.
i love sousa.
everything about the gardens just sang out how much love went into planning them.
you could just feel the care that went into planning them.
i found out later in the house tour that du pont planned everything himself, including the fountain displays, he loved his gardens and it shows.
i fell in love with this flower and i hope it will make an appearance in my yard next year.
i also fell in love with the 'best bett' dahlia....
i mean, how can you say no to that face.
i can't decide if i like it better in color or b&w... you decide.
sam the eagle.... do the muppets know you're here?
tool #1 that brought me through the heat.
i turned a corner and gasped.... such beauty, such love of gardens.
it was so wonderful to wander around where i wanted.... stop as long as i wanted, move on when i wanted.
hizzazle wasn't there to say 'it's really hot'.... and i didn't have anybody to stop from barreling into strangers or picking flowers...
one lovely day to recharge myself.
tool #2 that brought me through the heat.... straw hat.
this would be the special view i got when i had to retrieve my camera lens cap that fell below the steps....
wandering about alone and un-destracted doesn't necessarily translate into not dropping everything.
the reason du pont purchased the property originally was to save an arboretum.
he had strict instructions that in the arboretum live and dead trees were not to be removed under any circumstances.
the old farm house with a conservatory connecting to the addition built to replicate the original farm house.
i realize this is a sideways picture but i loved the glass case too much to not post it.
loved the mystery of the curved path...
that led to the conservatory four times the size of the home.
he built a bigger house for his flowers than himself.
'hoveround'
i stumbled into the back part where the mums were being grown and prepared for fall display.
love.
the fountain garden du pont designed after the chicago world's fair.... while being president of companies galore etc etc.
makes one feel small.. i can barely make bread and garden a 3 by 20 foot strip of dirt.
of course i found the roses and the boxwood gardens at the end when i had no time to loiter as hizazzle was patiently waiting for the car. four hours goes by quickly when beauty is all around you.
can't wait to go back.
All beautiful pics and a beautiful tour, but the lily pad with the purple flower...must be framed!! :)
