storage wars

side note: guess who's child went to their kiddie class without any valentine's to pass out.
mother of the year.

we have a small storage problem.
a problem in that we generally lack the ability to store anything out of sight because we have no downstairs closets and a small galley kitchen and a tendency towards hoarding pyrex.
i also have a tendency to purchase large amounts of food staples.  i might have a deep freezer with a shelf committed to frozen bread flour.  there is a small possibility i have six giant jars of mayonnaise in my house somewhere. ( i HATE running out of mayo)
i think we handle it pretty well (pat on back).
now, i have the ability to store large amounts of slightly perishable items: flour and sugar.
giant air-tight containers, tools of the food hoarding elite.
or people with a sam's club membership.

i have been eyeing these containers for six months and i have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting to go through my previous stash of 25lbs of sugar (if you change it to 20lbs and brown sugar you can say it like marilla... or you can just say it like marilla because that's fun and i love 'anne of green gables').
so when i was finally about to purchase new poundage i went to sam's on line only to discover that the lids were sold out.
what?
really?
so i had to order the containers from sam's (free shipping)
and the lids from amazon (not free shipping) but it was worth it because i'm slightly afraid of storing things in paper (what if there are roach eggs in the glue? absolutely real possibility)  i used to work in a grocery store yo.  if you think the produce section can look dirty, you ain't seen nothin' like what is behind them swinging double doors.
so all in all it cost me $5 extra than if i had been able to get it all from sam's.
they are great.  i love them.  i heart them.  it really doesn't take much to make me happy.  i was a little nervous that the lids were not sealing but i realized i wasn't acting strong enough with them.  a little pressure with my knee in the middle and i was able to snap the sides to a great seal.  and i have room for more poundage if i need.
the only thing i don't like is they are not BPA free.  sad face.  i don't think rubbermaid has come out with a product that large in BPA free.  an extremely small chance of something is better than the very likely chance of something else.  read: mice poop, roach eggs, other creepy crawlers.  i'll keep looking.  they were so inexpensive that when there is a BPA free version i'll replace them and use these for my other stuff.  there is always something that is better stored in an air tight plastic container.

and even though i had to rearrange my cupboards yet again, it was worth it.
in an anit-bug mind, a love letter to rubbermaid is an entirely appropriate valentines post.

dear rubbermaid,  you waited with baited breath to copy tupperware.  your patent ending patience is rewarded.  i love your air tight seal at a fraction of the tupperware cost.  and while you are not quite as pretty and lack the many stacking options as our past tupper love, i embrace you for your food storage and cost efficiency.

sincerely, pest paranoid housewife
