movies in january

there were so many good movies on tcm that all the progress i had been making
freeing up my dvr memory was completely destroyed.
i went from 20% free to 2%.
all in the matter of about three weeks.
currently i've worked up to 10%.
winter afternoons help... and the moments when i was sick and spent time on the couch.
some i only watch when p is sleeping.  just in case there is something i don't know about that i wouldn't want her seeing (considering any immoral things are only alluded to in these movies she wouldn't get it anyway but i figure the precedence of protection should be established)
'high time'.  bing crosby, fabian, dir. edward blake.
edward blakes direction makes it quirky enough for me to like.
if you like naive college humor it's really cute.
i love bing so i'd watch it again in a second.
i also love to look at the set from 1960.  that was the second best part.
'do not disturb'.  doris day, rod taylor.
again, 60's so fun to look at.
i like rod taylor in it too.
it's a chick flick and i'd definitely watch it again.
'jeanne eagels'.  kim novak, jeff chandler.
i looked up pictures of the real jeanne eagles and she was really pretty
and kim does a good job looking like her but....
really?
kim novak portraying a great early american dramatic cinema star??
really?? an actress with great talent?
it's no wonder they surrounded her with amazing supporting actors
and beautiful cinematography.
let's just say i undecorated my tree while watching this one.
i think kim confused acting with twitching her face.  really annoying.
'tea for two'.  gordon macrae and doris day.
any time you have gordon there is going to be some pretty stellar singing.
supposed to be set in the 20's but you'd never know by most of the costuming.
the set was better.
fun songs and fun dance routines.
kiddies can watch this one too.
'the lemon drop kid'.  bob hope.  marlyn maxwell.
it was funny.  not overly Christmas-y but Christmas setting.
first time aired on tcm.  not sure if i'm keeping or not.
i liked it.
'it's a date'. walter pidgeon.
it's not often i can disassociate walter pidgeon from 'how green was my valley'.
it was a pleasant way to spend pennies' nap (while plucking pine needles)
'brigadoon'.  gene kelly. van johnson.
i kind of watched it out of the side of my eye.
so beautiful but i was distracted.  pennie loved dancing with it.
'mother wore tights'.  betty garble. dan dailey.
fun.  pennie loved dancing.  dan dailey is really good and so is betty grable.
i really liked it.  good choice bob osborne,
'only angels have wings'.
cary grant. jean arthur. rita hayworth.
rita is so amazingly beautiful.  jean is so talented.
there is only one cary grant.
joan blondell.
great witty fast paced dialogue.
i'm only sorry i turned it on late and could only tape it partially.
i hope it's on again sometime
documentary on jack cardiff.
amazing cinematographer.
martin luther. 'driven to defiance' & 'reluctant revolutionary'.
pbs documenary
'city lights'.  charlie chaplin. i think that girl is the first mrs. cary grant.
'trouble along the way'.  john wayne. donna reed.
let's see... john wayne + football.
i liked it. it kind of leaves you hanging though.
'ziegfeld girl'.  jimmy stewart. lana turner. hedy lamarr. judy garland.
'the west point story'.  james cagney. gordon mcgrae. doris day.
i watch a lot of musicals.
not only are they pennie safe but i enjoy the tap and other dance routines.
pennie likes imitating these scenes.
'every girl should be married'.  cary grant. betsy drake.
diana lynn (my favorite girl from 'miracle on morgans creek')
if you like seeing cary grant stalked by a dreamy eyed betsy then this is for you.
i was way more perturbed by the stalking than the characters in the story.
'room for one more'.  cary grant. betsy drake.... but not as the same characters as above.
if you like a 1950's movie full of naiveté and heart warming scenes
then this is for you.
there were even boy scouts.
(as cheesy as this was... i cried more than once and i'd watch it over again)
'angel face'.  robert mitchum. jean simmons.
film noir.
creepy but
i could predict the ending but
'on our merry way'. short scenarios featuring different actors.
jimmy stewart. henry fonda. paulette goddard. meredith burgess. dorothy lamour. fred macmurry
i love tcm.
the past couple of months i've been compulsively recording anything with davis in it...
i never realized how good she is.  and how beautiful she was.
i love how tcm
especially because of the little extras they put in
extras like yesterday, meryl streep talking about how much bette davis inspired her a a girl.
i feel so validated.
'adam's rib'. spencer tracy. katherine hepburn. judy holliday.
katherine liked judy's comedy so much she helped land judy fight for film roles.
'pot o' gold'. jimmy stewart. paulette goddard.
good actors with music and a happy go lucky script.

one day when my dvr does not have a contract out on my life i'll start reading again.  i blame tcm.
it is, quite literally, the only reason we still have cable.
